FINANCIAL LITERACY, A NECESSARY SUBJECT OF STUDY IN SCHOOLS -SANUSI

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has revealed the current debate with the Federal Ministry of Education to incorporate financial literacy as a subject of study in schools of both primary and secondary institutions.

Sanusi said that he has concluded plans with the Bankers’ Committee to set aside a special day undertake financial enlightenment program for pupils of primary and secondary school.

Sanusi in his speech stressed the need for people to be financially literate to avoid being cheated by financial institution and as well improve their economic well-being.

Governor of the Central Bank highlighted that in making the Financial Literacy Program a success, the central bank in a very special way need the collaboration and participation of considerably large number of the stakeholders to make it a reality.

According to Sanusi, the steering committee for the program comprises of Chief Executives of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), National Pension Commission (PENCOM), Ministry of Finance, Federal Ministry of Education and the bankers committee, the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) among others.

He stipulated that the exercise was to achieve a financial literate Nigeria by the year 2020, adding that they are also involving people who has role to play in the financial literacy program.
