Sperm needs certain nutrients for their health and motility. Damaged ones may not be able to fertilize the egg. Most sperm damaged is caused by presence of free radicals; therefore taking diet high in antioxidants may help protect sperm cells from this damage.

Giving sperm a good chance to be healthy, the following nutrients are needed in the diet:

  • Water: This is often overlooked when trying to enhance sperm production. Drinking a lot of water to avoid dehydration in sperm production is very important.
  • Zinc: This is an essential component in genetic material and a deficiency can cause changes in chromosome in either male or female. It deficiency can lead to reduced fertility and increased risk of miscarriage .It is needed in reproductive hormones estrogen and progesterone. It is also needed to make up the outer layer and tail of the sperm and needs to be replaced as a significant amount is lost with each ejaculation.
  • Selenium: It has antioxidant qualities which help to protect against the effects of free radicals within the body that can cause chromosomal changes. It is also needed to maximize sperm formation and production of testosterone; it helps lengthen the life span of the sperm and protects it from malnourishment. It’s a trace element commonly found in eggs, fish, mushroom and meat.
  • Omega 3 and Omega 6: They are essential fatty acid obtained from diet. They help promote good level of healthy mobile sperm, they also breakdown in the body to produce prostaglandins for healthy semen. Omega 3 can be found in oily fish while Omega 6 in nuts and seeds.
  • Vitamin E: Its important in boosting sperm count, protects the head of the sperm from dehydrating, allowing it to stay nourished and healthy at all times. Sources are wheat germ, nuts and seeds, avocado, green leafy vegetables and free range eggs.
    • Vitamin C: prevents the sperm from clumping, protect sperm and DNA within it from damage.eg tomatoes, citrus fruit, berries and vegetables.
    • Folate: It is a B vitamin, helps to promote protein absorption in the testicular area by utilizing protein, which helps the penis and testicles to function better. Can be found in seafood, animal liver and red meat.
    • L-Arginine,L-Carnitine and Taurine: They are amino acids required for normal production and functioning of sperm aiding sperm quantity, quality and motility. They strengthen the cell structure of the sperm. Since amino acids are building blocks of protein, eating sufficient good quality protein is important.Work in conjunction with your physician if you have existing medical condition.
