Following calls made by Nigerians to Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka over his green card’s destruction after the emergence of Donald Trump as US President-elect, Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, says he has destroyed his green card.

According to ceoafrica, Soyinka, a professor of Literature, said in Johannesburg that he had fulfilled his earlier vow made ahead of the US presidential election.

“I have already done it, I have disengaged from the United States. I have done what I said I would do,” Soyinka, 82, said.

Mr Soyinka had said he would destroy his card if Donald Trump triumphed over his major challenger and candidate of the Democratic Party, Hillary Clinton, in the November 8 election.

“The moment they announce his [Trump’s] victory, I will cut my green card myself and start packing up,” he had told a gathering at Oxford University.

As soon as it became clear that Trump had emerged victorious at the elections, social media became agog with calls for Soyinka to fulfil his vow with which he responded with a note he titled “Red Card, Green Card – Notes Towards the Management of Hysteria”, wherein he said he would not be bullied into fulfilling “a private decision whose execution was already in the making”.

However, he was attacked by Nigerians again over the destruction, as some queried the reason why the destruction wasn’t done in public.
