Report just reaching Ceoafrica reveals that the Outgoing Gambian President, Yahya Jammeh, has declared a 90-day state of emergency, a day before his official mandate ends.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and other African bodies have been trying to persuade President Jammeh to hand over power to Adama Barrow, who defeated him in the Country’s December polls.
The move comes after Nigeria deployed a warship to further pressurize Yahya Jammeh, and ECOWAS too has prepared a force but maintains that military intervention would be a last resort.
The exact terms of the state of emergency remain unknown, as no details were provided with the declaration despite Adama Barrow’s inauguration on Thursday.
