Gambia’s President Lawyer, Edward Anthony Gomez, has fled to Senegal after writing a letter to the president urging him to give up power and step aside in the interest of peace, and love of his compatriots.

According to Ceoafrica, Edward Anthony Gomez whose letter had the heading “in the interest of peace and stability”, said he had worked for President Jammeh under "tremendous pressure and coercion”.

Parts of the letter’s first paragraph reads “on Tuesday, 17th of January 2017, my son and I took a crucial decision to seek sanctuary in the sister Republic of Senegal due to the mounting fear and rapidly increasing tension at every passing moment."

Gomez who also doubles as Lawyer for President Jammeh and his party, Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC) added that he escaped 24-hour security to reach Senegal with his family.

He hinted that he was coerced into filing President Jammeh's legal challenge against the election result after most other lawyers refused.

Gomez also implored President Jammeh to step down and avoid a "violent and gruesome end":
