Somalia’s election has come and gone, but the memory lingers as it was held amidst insecurity threat which many thought would worsen by the terror group, al-Shabab, and the inauguration of Mohamed Abdullahi nicknamed "Farmajo" as Somalia’s president was a colourful one despite being held in a hangar at Mogadishu’s international airport.
According to Ceoafrica, security was tight at the airport and commercial flights were suspended; heads of states from Kenya, Djibouti and Ethiopia jetted in for the event.
However, the threat from al-Shabab remains and the group has promised to continue attacking the new government.
But, President Mohamed in his speech appealed to the militants to lay down their weapons and help rebuild the country, commended the African Union troops for their efforts in stabilising the country and also highlighted the importance of rebuilding Somalia’s military to take over security duties.
Mohamed who pledged action to fight rampant corruption and a drought crisis which are immediate challenges for the new administration also faces the huge task of leading the country’s economic recovery after decades of conflict.
