JOSE MOURINHO won his first trophy at Manchester United against Southampton today as the Red Devils won the EFL Cup. Southampton should have had the first goal of the game when Manolo Gabbiadini poked the ball home from close range, but he was incorrectly ruled offside by the officials and the goal was dissallowed.
Shortly afterwards United took the lead through Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who smashed a free-kick past Fraser Forster from 25 yards after Oriol Romeu fouled Ander Herrera on the edge of the area.
Southampton remained the better of the two sides throughout the first half and had the bulk of the chances. But it was United who manged to slice through Saints’ defence and add a second, Jesse Lingard applying the finishing touch with a low finish after a brilliant passing move. Southampton were handed a lifeline just before halftime when Manolo Gabbiadini finished from close range after a James Ward-Prowse cross.
And Saints got off to a lightning start in the second, with their Italian January signing adding another after United failed to clear a corner.
Then Ibrahimovic broke Southampton hearts when he rose high to head a perfect Herrera cross into the back of the net to seal the tie.
