No fewer than four people were reported to have been burnt to death in a tanker explosion that occurred at Fidiwo axis along the corridor of Lagos/Ibadan expressway.

The tragic incident happened on Tuesday, at about 2.28pm, when a tanker loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) fell, spilled its content and later caught fire.

The driver of the ill-fated tanker was said to have lost control while trying to overtake another fuel tanker.

It was gathered that the tanker was traveling towards Ibadan before the unfortunate happened.

Men of the state Fire Service were said to have battled for over two hours to put out the inferno.

The incident was confirmed by the State Commandant of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Clement Oladele.

He commended the effort of the fire fighters in putting the raging fire under control to avoid further disaster.

He said, “The incident occurred when the burnt tanker with the number plate FFA 752 XA brushed the other tanker by the side while overtaking it.

“This resulted to loss of control and subsequent crash with the resultant impact of fire outbreak on both vehicles.”

He, however, said that only one body was found at the scene while the Public Relations Officer, Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, said that four people trapped in the tanker were burnt beyond recognition.

He said, “The TRACE personnel on ground at the scene of the accident said four persons died in the tanker inferno.

“They told me the four victims were trapped inside the ill-fated tanker. Two others were also said to have been injured.”
