For the umpteenth time, the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu has passionately appealed to the federal government to speed up the conversion of the prestigeous Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) to a university.

The monarch made the appeal yesterday as the newly constituted Governing Council of the institution, led by its chairman, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) visited him in his palace.

According to Oba Akiolu, the nation’s pioneer higher institution with its pedigree of producing graduates who are making significant contributions to national development should be encouraged to do more.

Federal Government had in 2006, 2010 and 2016 made attempts to convert the college and the Kaduna Polytechnic to City Universities for the award of B.Tech, but this has proved futile as the attempts never saw the light of the day.

Akiolu, however, said “those who picked Fagbemi as Chairman of the Council actually realised that whatever he lays his hands on prospers.

He will be working with a productive Rector, who is also a strong woman.” He described Fagbemi’s appointment as timely and commended the government for its determination to put square peg in square hole for appointing such an astute legal practitioner and Senior Advocate of Nigeria for the exalted position.
