The National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) has said of the total number of 57,387 candidates that sat for the May/June 2017 NABTEB examination, 33,712 candidates scored five credits and above, including English Language and Mathematics, representing 58.75%
Registrar/Chief Executive of NABTEB, Prof. (Mrs.) Ifeoma Isiugo-Abanihe disclosed this yesterday while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the examination in Benin City, the Edo State capital.
The Registrar said 47,360 candidates scored five credits and above with or without English Language and Mathematics representing 82.53% in the National Business Certificate/National Technical Certificate examinations while only 1,905 candidates were involved in examination malpractice representing 3.26% of the total number that sat for the examinations.
She said this represents a marginal reduction from the figures of the previous year where examination malpractice of 2,273 cases, representing 3.32% was recorded.
Prof. Ifeoma said a total of 58,448 candidates enrolled for the examinations in 1,458 centres but only 57,387 candidates sat for the examinations representing 98.18% of the total enrolment.
The NABTEB boss said though the body has made progress, it was still very far below expectation considering the nation’s quest for rapid technological development and the significant role of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Nigeria.
She said for the nation to be technically advanced, both the national and state houses of assembly should legislate on the establishment of more modern and well equipped technical colleges in more local government areas in the country.
She said NABTEB activities are central to the actualisation of the change agenda of the Nigerian government in the area of Technical and Vocational Education and Training.
She called for concerted efforts by all stakeholders to stem the tide of youth restiveness and unemployment in the country by promoting technical and vocational education and training.
She opined that the implementation of the National Vocational Qualifications Framework which was approved by the Federal Executive Council in 2013 would promote the studies of technical education in the country.
She said parents and guardians should take advantage of the removal of the dichotomy between polytechnic education and university by the federal government, to encourage their wards to embrace technical and vocational education and training right from the basic education level as TVET is a veritable tool for self-reliance and sustainable wealth creation.
