Every day, approximately 300,000 people cross the border for business, tourism, school, and visiting family and friends. The Borders across Africa no doubt is faced with many kind of security threat that insecurity is presently taking overriding stand. The globalization process which calls for border to be increasingly open with little or no barriers has been suspected to be the cause of contrabands, criminals, illegal migrants and terrorist littered all over the community. Protecting African borders from the illegal movement of weapons, drugs, contraband, and people, while promoting lawful entry and exit, is essential to homeland security, economic prosperity, and national sovereignty.
There is a principal need to deployed unprecedented levels of personnel, technology, and resources and to make critical security improvements to secure and manage our borders. International Trade is critical to Africa economy, and the entire world, the border security agents however, should aim at increasing security while facilitating the flow of commerce. They should also be committed to keeping it safe and vibrant by screening all travelers entering the Continent’s border using a risk-based approach.
There is need for cross-component, multi-agency venue for Identifying, monitoring and addressing emerging trends and threats along the border. The importance of partnership, intelligence and information sharing to achieving border security can never be over ruled.
The authorities of African economy must ensure improved technology for target detection and classification. Communication and sensor signal facilities like thermal camera system, mobile surveillance system, remote video surveillance system, Radio Frequency Identification, etc are paramount to incorporate different aspects of intelligence in achieving security in our borders in view of the fact that factors of insecurity with its sophisticated devices has bamboozled the border security operation.
Border infrastructures are to be given serious attention through rehabilitation and improving of ports of entry at the borders to render it more formidable for any terror penetration.
The personnel component of the border security agency to a very large extent is important for the successful implementation of security measures. Sadly enough, the achievement of security in our borders is most of the time manned by stain image created by the supposed pioneers of security through bribery and corruption, inability to protect the integrity of intelligence, poor accountability process, unprofessional conducts, poor funding on the part of the government, and in some cases shortage of manpower. There is however need for employment of reliable hands to handle the security operation in the borders to avoid producing more confused state in the name of trying to provide security.
The importance of collaboration to develop, advance, and enhance cross border operation cannot be overruled in achieving true security. Africans are to engage in several national initiatives to increase security and enhance economic prosperity in the country.
Border enforcement agents are to integrate mobile response capability that will maximize border enforcement efforts through collaboration. Partnership creates unity of effort and help security agencies to grow relationships that further develop integration and coordination between agencies working to counter insecurity in the continent.
Through collaboration, the initiative based on increasing information sharing, harmonizing policies and programs, and ensuring the coordination and cooperation can be implemented.
Unemployment plays a major role in the aspect of insecurity. Security becomes unachievable when the population is not gainfully employed. An economy that experiences high rate of unemployment continues to breed crime of various categories and poses irresolvable challenges to attainment of security.
However, Government intervention is very pertinent in making the attainment of a secured Africa a reality through massive creation of job with good pay to divert the attention of the population from the temptation of meeting ends meet through cruel means that threatens the security of the borders and the continent at large.
Moreover, unemployment drives people to want to involve in criminal activities like; Drug trafficking, illegal migration, illicit movement of prohibited or controlled goods, Formation of terrorist group etc. government need to relentlessly continue to be on the lookout for avenues of job creation to keep the ever-increasing population reasonably engaged in other to mitigate potential threats along our borders.
Security is an encompassing phenomenon that can be narrowed down to the individual, considering the fact that if every individual is security conscious of the environment, then the whole Africa is secured. Security issues before taking a bigger picture evolve from an individual, justifying the point that the security challenges are not faceless but are initiated by humans.
Africa needs established platforms through which proper security orientation would be delivered on a regular basis, to continuously imbibe in the people, the zeal for security consciousness, to empower and equip them in detecting and fighting insecurity from the grass root before it becomes a global threat.
