THE United States yesterday expressed concern over reports of the deteriorating political climate in Edo State.

In a statement on its social media platforms, the US Mission in Nigeria said that it was disappointed with the role of some political actors in the state.

According to the statement, the U.S.  will continue to follow political developments ahead of off-cycle elections in the country as Nigeria’s ally. It further states that the United States supports a democratic process where the will of the Nigerian people is reflected in the results, and does not favour any party or candidate.

The statement revealed that the U.S. is most concerned with reports of the deteriorating political climate in Edo State and expressed disappointment with the role played by some political actors in the state. It said it will continue to monitor the allegations of interference by security forces in political matters closely in the run-up to gubernatorial elections in the state in September.

As a word of advice, it urged Nigerians and all stakeholders to work towards a free, fair, transparent, and peaceful process as we approach the 2020 off-cycle elections in Edo and Ondo. Also, it has encouraged all stakeholders, including INEC, political parties, and the security services, to continue to improve the electoral process.

While holding Nigeria as an epitome of good Africa’s leadership, it has pledged to remain committed to working together to achieve its mutual goals of peace and prosperity for the citizens of both our countries.
