Governor Nasir El-rufai of Kaduna state has mentioned that he will not be contesting in the 2023 presidential election with a suggestion that power ownership should go to the South domain after the end of President Muhammad Buhari’s tenure.

El-Rufai aired his opinion while speaking to newsmen yesterday where he cleared the air over the masses’ opinion of his eyeing of the presidency seat ever since he became a minister in Abuja. He said such opinions about him are only wishful thinking because he has never vied for the presidential seat.

According to him, it is God who gives power to whosoever he pleases whether that person wants it or not. While also speaking on the unwritten agreement for the oscillation of presidential power between the North and the South, he said that there is already a clear and acceptable way of power succession which has been in practice over the years in Nigeria.

The agreement involves a power shift between the North and South where the North rules for eight years after which the South will take over and rule for eight years.  El-rufai added that even though there is no written arrangement on the power shift, every politician who understands the system knows of the arrangement. He said this is why he has said that after the completion of President Buhari’s term in office, no politician in the North is expected to contest for the 2023 election.

The Governor has called for the support of the South to produce the next president who will succeed Buhari. He further noted that even though he is in support of power shift to the South, the person who will eventually emerge must be fit enough to rule the country.
