Egypt's First Lady Entissar el-Sisi wished the Egyptian people and Muslims all over the world a happy new Hijri year.

Coinciding with the new year in the Islamic Hijri calender, which dates back to the day Prophet Mohamed and his companions migrated from Mecca to Medina, the first lady wrote her greeting on Facebook.

"Today we celebrate the beginnign of a new Hijri year, which reminds us of the most noble human values and inspires us with love, brotherhood and mercy," she said.

"May every year passes with all Egyptians and Muslim ummah safe and sound, and many returns of this memory along with prosperity, grace and blessings," she added.

Today, Muslims celebrate 1442 years since Prophet Mohamed's migration from his birthplace to find refuge from persecution. In Medina, the prophet rallied his supporters and returned to Mecca eight years later, taking over the holy city without a battle.
