Archbishop of Catholic Archdiocese of Ibadan, His Grace , Most Rev Dr Gabriel 'Leke Abegunrin has said Nigeria needs politicians who truly love the country with their heart before there can be a change in the situation of the country.
He stated this during an interview with CEOAFRICA at the inauguration ceremony of the first female Vice Chancellor of Dominican University, Samonda, Ibadan, Professor Jacinta Opara, held on Monday, 1st July 2024 at Tom and Carolyn Walker Hall of the University.
When asked about his perception of the current state of thing in the country, Abegunrin stated that the problem of Nigeria did not start today but can be traced to when the government took over schools in Nigeria.
According to him, the taking over of schools by the government, led to the destruction of education in the country which he described as the genesis of the current degenerated state of the country.
The cleric who said most Nigerians work for the good of themselves and are only willing to work when there is something attached to benefit them, called on the citizens of the country to work for the common good of the nation at large.
Stating that working for the common good of the country is essential to the country’s transformation, the clergyman also said lack of mentors has brought about decadence in the moral standard of the country.
“The young ones are wrongly mentored to do evil and corrupt practices,” he lamented.
He therefore urged the citizens of the country to ask God for forgiveness and do things right, saying that the changes desired must start from the home front if there would be a better Nigeria.
