President Joe Biden of the United States has told his Democratic Party lawmakers that he cannot step down from being candidate of the party for the presidential election due in November.

The President who has come under pressure to step down his candidacy after a number of gaffes in a televised debate with his Republican Party opponent Donald Trump, said Monday that now is not the time to talk about him stepping down.

There is talk already that should Biden choose to run no more, he could nominate Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him on the presidential ticket of the Democratic Party for the November 5 election.

Against such proposition, President Biden, in a letter to congressional Democrats on Monday, stood firm on his candidacy, demanding an end to the “intraparty drama” that has torn Democrats apart since his widely discussed public debate.

“The question of how to move forward has been well-aired for over a week now; and it’s time for it to end,” Biden wrote in his letter.

Biden’s letter came to light as lawmakers were returning to Washington where they will decide whether to work with or edge Biden out of the 2024 presidential race.

This comes as a touchy matter at what is described as a make-or-break time for Biden’s reelection hope and the lawmakers’ and Democratic Party’s future.

Biden wrote however that rather than expend energy on how well or badly he did in the presidential debate, the Democratic Party has one job: to beat the Republican Party’s presidential nominee, Donald Trump.

Biden said in his letter, distributed by his reelection campaign officials: “We have 42 days to the Democratic Convention and 119 days to the general election. Any weakening of resolve or lack of clarity about the task ahead only helps Trump and hurts us. It’s time to come together, move forward as a unified party, and defeat Donald Trump.”
