Ahead of the African Academy of Sciences 15th General Assembly & Scientific Conference in Abuja, Nigeria from 8 to 11 December 2024, the Local Organising Chairman (LOC) of the 15th General Assembly and Scientific Conference of the Africa Academy of Science (AAS) and Chrisland University team comprising Professor (Mrs.) Chinedum Peace Babalola, Vice Chancellor of Chrisland University, and her principal officers, Professor Olatunde Farombi ,Deputy Vice -Chancellor, Mr. Samuel Omotoso, Registrar, and Dr. Matthew O. Alabi, Director of Academic Planning, paid a visit to Olusegun Obasanjo, the former President of Nigeria. ,
The team's visit to Olusegun Obasanjo on the 9th of September, 2024 was not only to honor him because the conference will be held in Nigeria but also to acknowledge his significant role and honorable statesmanship in the field of science in the continent. The former President during his tenure played a significant role in providing funds for the building and establishment of AAS. Fellows of AAS comprises individuals who are elected because they have reached the highest level of excellence in their field of expertise and have made contributions to the advancement of science in their field on the African continent and are elected based on their achievements that includes their publication record, innovations, leadership roles and contribution to society.
The AAS has a bi annual award called “the Olusegun Obasanjo awards”. This award is given to deserving individuals in the following field of science: who have excelled and are deserving of the award in their field of science
The scientific conference which is first of its kind in Nigeria themed “Empowering and advancing Africa's scientific enterprise” is being organised by the LOC led by Professor Friday Okonofua and his committee
Professor Friday Okonofua is the current Secretary General of AAS is a fellow and also the Strategic Plan 2023-2027. He is currently the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the University of Medical Sciences in Ondo City, Nigeria. The conference promises to be educational and will draw participants from different parts of the continent and the world. It will also feature awards for deserving selected scientists.
