WASPEN and National Hospital Abuja to Host Groundbreaking Clinical Nutrition Conference

The West African Society of Parenteral & Enteral Nutrition (WASPEN), in collaboration with the National Hospital Abuja (NHA), is set to host the highly anticipated WASPEN 2025 Clinical Nutrition Conference. The event, themed "Bridging the Gap: Integrating Hospital and Community Malnutrition Care in Developing Countries," will take place from June 17th to 19th, 2025, at the Trauma Center, National Hospital Abuja.

The conference will feature a stellar lineup of guests; Muhammad Ali Pate, the Minister of Health, will be the Special Guest of Honor. Chief Host, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of FCT, alongside Host Prof. Muhammad Raji Mahmud, CMD of the National Hospital, will welcome participants.

Notable keynote speakers, include Dr. (Prof.) Bala Audu, President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Prof. Chinedum Peace Babalola, Former VC, Chrisland University and Tajudeen Olutope Ahmed Esq., National President, Institute of Dietetics in Nigeria

The conference will be chaired by Prof. Cyril Usifoh, the Immediate Past President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN). Key figures like Pharm. Nanret Blessing Basil Ghinsel and Pharm. Clara Adesola will head the organizing committee as CPC Chairperson and LOC Chairperson, respectively.

Esteemed guests of honor include Pharm. Ibrahim Tanko Ayuba, President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Professor Salisu Maiwada Abubakar, President of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN) and Comr. Haruna Mamman, President of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives

The Clinical Nutrition Conference aims to bring together experts in the field of nutrition to share knowledge and best practices in addressing the pressing issue of malnutrition in developing countries by fostering collaboration and innovation between hospitals and community-based solutions. Attendees will participate in discussions, workshops, and networking sessions designed to formulate actionable strategies for effective nutritional care integration.

In a release made available to CEOAFRICA, arrival for the conference will be on Tuesday June 17th and on Wednesday June 18th, participants will enjoy an on-site health walk which will be led by the first lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu. This activity aims to promote physical wellness among attendees before the commencement of the conference.

WASPEN which was founded in 2019 by Dr. Teresa Isichei Pounds, is a focused organization committed to improving Clinical Nutritional care in West Africa through Clinical Education, Research, and Interdisciplinary Medical collaboration. The organization aims to raise awareness of issues surrounding nutrition and address the support needed for patients in hospitals.

Dr. Teresa Isichei Pounds, Pharm BCNSP, the visionary leader behind WASPEN, brings a wealth of experience to the field of clinical nutrition. She has worked as the PGY1 Pharmacy Resident Program Director at WellStar Atlanta Medical Center, Manager of Pharmacy Clinical Services at the same institution, and Assistant Dean for Clinical Pharmacy at South University, College of Pharmacy Savannah campus. In addition to being the founder of WASPEN, Dr. Pounds is a fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Pharmacy (FNAPHARM), Former Chairperson of the Nigerian Pharmacist and Pharmaceutical Scientists Association (NAPPSA), and a member of American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN).
