Liberian President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf
It was gathered from Liberia that investigation is ongoing into what causes President Helen Johnson Sirleaf to be trapped inside an elevator at Royal Grand Hotel, CEOAFRICA.com gathered.
The President, according to sources, was trapped inside the elevator along with her Security Chief, when the power supply of the hotel went off. The Executive Protection Service Director, Othello Warrick had to forcibly open the elevator door to get the president out before the power was restored to the hotel minutes later. She was to attend a meeting aimed at discussing the fragility of the state at the hotel.
It was also revealed that the light which went off could have resulted from the change from one power generator to another, due to poor electricity supply currently ravaging the country.
According to the Executive Protection Service Director, Othello Warrick, the incident could have been avoided from happening. “The management failed to inform security personnel assigned on ground that they were about to switch generator. Before switching the power, they should have informed the EPS. I had to force the door open for the President to go down,” he said.
This action has been described as a serious security breach which the management of the hotel must be ready to account for.
Meanwhile, officials of the hotel have given a written statement to the police following some questioning, as many are wondering why the hotel management would choose to switch power at the time it was aware of an ongoing international conference with several VIPS in attendants and worse of all, at the time the President was taking the lift.
