Elections: I-G launches “Operational Guidelines’’ for police personnel

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Sulieman Abba has launched “Operational Guidelines’’ for police personnel that would be involved in the conduct of the forthcoming general elections.

Abba said that the launch of 28-page pocket booklet on Wednesday in Abuja that the documents would guide the officers on their non-partisanship, accessibility and humility in providing security for the exercise.

Reports said that the booklet is titled: “The Nigeria Police Force Standard Operational Guideline of Rules for Police Officers on Electoral Duty’’.

“One of the strategies we have adopted to live up to expectations in the provision of security for the 2015 elections is to educate our personnel.

“I hope other stakeholders will also sensitise their members so that the current apprehension can be reduced,’’ he said.

The I-G said that the book would be extended to sister security agencies that would work with the police in providing security during the elections.

“It is simply a guide to all police officers on their legal responsibilities and ethical expectations from members of the public.

“It is aimed at improving the individual and ultimately the general performance of the Nigeria police force in ensuring free, fair and credible elections.

“It is for police officers right from the rank of Inspector-General of Police to the Constable,’’ he said.

Abba warned that any officer who engaged in unprofessional conduct during the exercise would be sanctioned in line with the Police Act and Regulations.
