The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has condemned the suspension of Governor Simi Fubara of Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu through a declaration of emergency rule, urging the President to prioritise national unity, stability over partisan interests.
According to NYCN, in a press statement on Thursday signed by its National President, Comrade Isah Abubakar, the removal of a democratically elected Governor of Rivers State, as orchestrated by the leadership of President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s administration is a brazen act that undermines the democratic principles that the nation cherishes and jeopardizes the rule of law.
The statement reads, “We view this action as a direct assault on the will of the people, as expressed through their votes. Such actions threaten the very foundation of our democratic system and raise concerns about the integrity of governance in Nigeria.
“The Council calls upon all stakeholders, including the judiciary and civil society, to uphold the tenets of democracy and ensure that the voice of the electorate is respected.
“We urge President Tinubu’s administration to prioritise national unity and stability over partisan interests and to foster an environment where governance is guided by law, respect and accountability.
“We emphasise that the democracy we fought for must not be betrayed by political manoeuvring that disregards the constitution and the will of the people.
“We stand with the people of Rivers State and call for the immediate restoration of their elected leadership. The Northern Youth Council reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding democracy and promoting good governance across Nigeria.”
