The International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety) has called on Anambra state Government to set up judicial commission of enquiry into the Onitsha drug market crisis.
It alleged that National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) operatives and security agents have engaged in outside the law activities.
Emeka Umeagbalasi, Board Chairman of Intersociety in a statement made available to Journalists in Enugu said “the recent events at the Onitsha drug market have left many traders counting their losses.
“Sophia Eberechukwu Okoye, one of the affected traders, lost a staggering N15 million worth of clothes and shoes to looters. This incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability.
“Intersociety is demanding that the Anambra State Government and State Assembly conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. The group wants the voices of genuine drug traders to be heard, and their losses to be ascertained.
“We also want to uncover how the traders’ shops were broken into and billions of naira worth of genuine drugs confiscated.
“Intersociety is also seeking to unmask the operational illegalities of NAFDAC and its deployed soldiers and police personnel. The group believes that these agents have overstepped their bounds, leading to a looming crisis that could result in the loss of lives and properties.
“Intersociety is advocating for a short-term political solution through an all-inclusive legislative public hearing. This, they believe, will provide a platform for all stakeholders to come together and find a way to re-open the market.
In solidarity with the affected traders, Intersociety has thrown its weight behind their peaceful street protest, which took place on March 25, 2025.
“We believe that the traders rights must be respected and protected,” he said.
