Elder Omidokun Oyekunle, the PAN Oyo State Chairman
In an exclusive interview with CEOAFRICA, Elder Omidokun Oyekunle, the PAN Oyo State Chairman, emphasized the urgent need for cooperative action among poultry farmers to address the myriad challenges currently plaguing the industry in Nigeria. Speaking at the 2025 Mega Poultry Workshop, themed "Strengthening Poultry Farming Through Cooperative Synergy & Strategic Investments," Oyekunle shed light on how collaboration and government support can revitalize the sector and encourage youth participation.
“We decided to focus on this theme this year because we recognize the various challenges facing the poultry industry in Nigeria,” Oyekunle stated. “We cannot solve these problems in isolation; the only way we can make significant progress is by coming together as cooperatives.” He underscored the importance of unity among farmers, processors, and stakeholders in tackling issues such as high production costs, market instability, and limited access to financing.
To this end, Oyekunle urged the government to create a dedicated forum aimed at training and empowering youth in agricultural practices. “Our government should establish platforms where they will train the youth practically, empowering them while allowing existing farmers to mentor them. This will not only help combat the ‘japa’ syndrome—a trend of young people leaving Nigeria in search of better opportunities—but also inspire them to consider agriculture as a viable and attractive career path,” he asserted.
Looking ahead, Oyekunle shared the next steps for PAN Oyo State, revealing plans to source inputs for its members at significantly reduced costs to enhance their profit margins. “Our goal is to help our members thrive in their farming ventures. We are committed to sourcing high-quality inputs at minimal costs. Additionally, we aim to upgrade our workshop to international standards, which will empower more farmers with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed,” he added. His driving philosophy is simple yet powerful: “I strive to leave the poultry industry in Oyo State better than I met it.”
Elder Oyekunle’s vision encapsulates a commitment to fostering a sustainable poultry industry in Nigeria. By focusing on cooperation, training, and mentorship, he believes that the sector can overcome the obstacles it currently faces. “If we can work together and leverage the strengths of each farmer, we will be well-equipped to tackle the challenges ahead and contribute positively to Nigeria's food security,” he emphasized.
As discussions at the workshop continued to highlight the vital role of poultry farming, attendees reflected on the potential for transforming the industry. Elder Oyekunle’s insights resonate with the need for a collective approach to foster an environment where both established and aspiring farmers can thrive.
The commitment shown by PAN Oyo State to uplift the poultry sector signals hope for Nigeria’s agricultural landscape. With appropriate government support and a concerted effort to empower the youth, the future of poultry farming could very well pave the way for a resilient and sustainable agricultural economy.
As the workshop concluded, Elder Omidokun’s call for unity echoed among participants, instilling a renewed sense of purpose and the belief that together, they can overcome the hurdles threatening the poultry sector and secure a legacy of agricultural prosperity for future generations in Nigeria.
