In a poignant message marking Easter, Bishop Emmanuel Adetoyese Badejo, the Catholic Bishop of Oyo Diocese, has called on Nigerians and people worldwide to reflect on the true meaning of the Easter celebration amid ongoing crises that mar the joy of the season.
Easter, a celebration of Jesus Christ's resurrection and the victory over death, should be a time of joy and hope, the bishop noted. However, he lamented, "How many can celebrate Easter in Ukraine, Haiti, Gaza, Yemen, Sudan, or the Democratic Republic of Congo, in Plateau, Borno and Zamfara States and other places in Nigeria?" He underscored the grim reality faced by those living in regions plagued by war, violence, and despair.
Bishop Badejo urged leaders and those in positions of influence to take responsibility for creating a better world. He stated, “Easter brings joy, but it thus indicts all leaders and people in positions of influence who refuse to use their position, power, resources, and influence to generate joy by prosecuting and stopping evil around them.” He condemned leaders who ignore the suffering of others, characterizing them as “mere thieves and brigands” who exploit the people’s resources and peace.
Reflecting on the teachings of Jesus, the bishop remarked that those in power today are often neglecting the law, justice, mercy, and good faith. He invoked the spirit of service exemplified by Jesus, saying, “Jesus was different; he came to serve not to be served. He applied all he had at his disposal to save his followers.” He challenged leaders to evaluate what sacrifices they have made to merit their status and responsibilities.
Bishop Badejo also called upon Christians to examine their faith and commitment to Christ. He emphasized the importance of honesty, mercy, and compassion, urging clergy to move beyond a focus on prosperity gospel. "We must stop preaching only the sweet prosperity gospel... which gives people false hopes of success without hard work," he warned.
He instilled hope by quoting St. Peter, urging Christians to "be patient and enduring in your faith." The bishop reminded the faithful that they have a mandate to spread the joy and hope of Easter during challenging times, emphasizing that “God turns everything to the good of those who love him.”
As he concluded his message, Bishop Badejo encouraged all to make an effort to share joy with one another this Easter. “Make someone smile at Easter, but remember that you are also someone!” he said, reaffirming that hope should not be lost because "Jesus is risen."
With this powerful message, the Bishop extended his wishes for a "Happy Easter to all, to Nigeria and to the world," invoking the spirit of Alleluia, a celebration of life, hope, and resurrection.
