This special event, which celebrated International Women's Day 2025, took place at the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER), Oyo Road.
Distinguished guests present at the program included the Chief Host and keynote speaker, Prof. Antonia T. Simbine, Director-General of NISER; Prof. K.O. Adebowale, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) Prof. Aderonke Baiyeroju; Dr. Mercy Iroaganachi, University Librarian; Prof. Janice Olawoye, Chairperson of the occasion; Prof. Oyedunni Arulogun, Vice Chancellor of Chrisland University; Mr. G.O. Saliu, Registrar of the University of Ibadan; Prof. Peace Babalola, former Vice Chancellor of Chrisland University; and Prof. Aina O. Adeogun, OWSD Ibadan Coordinator.
The event also welcomed Directors-General from allied research institutions, including the University of Ibadan, University College Hospital, The Polytechnic Ibadan, NIHORT, FRIN, NAGGRAB, IAR&T, CRIN, IITA, NISER, and FCHAPT, along with Provosts, Rectors, Deans, Heads of Departments, and numerous researchers.
In her opening remarks, Prof. Aina O. Adeogun expressed gratitude for the support received, stating, “I want to thank the DG of NISER for her unwavering support every time we call on her for assistance. I also extend my gratitude to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, and I appreciate the Librarian, who is my sister from our undergraduate days. I thank our punctual life member, the Chairman of this occasion, and I appreciate all of you for your commitment.”
Prof. Adeogun elaborated on OWSD's mission: “OWSD is a program unit of UNESCO, founded in 1987 to bring women scientists together for collaboration. Initially focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), we realized the importance of incorporating perspectives from other fields such as education, social sciences, and the arts. OWSD Ibadan stands as the largest chapter in Nigeria, with over 400 members representing more than 10 institutions, including the University of Ibadan, University College Hospital, and several research institutes.”
She highlighted the organization's recent activities, noting, “Since 2022, we have organized 10 webinars to enhance scientific consciousness among our members, along with workshops—today marks our third one—seminars, and conferences. We have celebrated the International Day of the Girl Child since 2017 and introduced an annual picnic/retreat for relaxation and interaction starting in 2022."
Prof. Antonia T. Simbine delivered the keynote address titled "Breaking Barriers, Driving Innovation: The Growing Impact of Women in Research." She stated, "Women's advancement in research has always been close to my heart. My journey in research began decades ago, and my appointment marks a significant step toward breaking barriers, although much work remains to ensure that more women drive innovation and impact research. Across Africa, particularly in Nigeria, women are not just participating in research—they are transforming it."
She continued, “The progress hasn't come easily; it results from resilience, diligence, determination, and a collective commitment to challenging deeply rooted systems of exclusion. According to data, only 23% of researchers in Nigeria are women, which highlights glaring gender imbalances and broader socio-economic inequalities. In contrast, smaller countries lead the continent with female representation rates of 48.6%, 46.6%, and 45.8%, respectively, according to UNESCO."
Addressing the challenges, she outlined: "Women face societal and domestic challenges, often balancing professional responsibilities with household duties. Many work environments favor men when hiring, as highlighted by a 2020 UNESCO study indicating that women in African research institutions are underrepresented in senior academic and administrative positions due to entrenched gender biases. Securing research funding poses another significant challenge, compounded by cultural norms and leadership gaps that continue to hinder progress."
To navigate these challenges, Prof. Simbine emphasized the need for institutional reforms and policy recommendations. “We require parental leave policies, family-friendly work environments, flexible work schedules, and an ongoing commitment to gender equity. Every young academic researcher must have a mentor to guide them,” she advised.
In closing her keynote address, she encouraged determination and collaboration among women in research: “We need to be focused, consistent, and ready to say no when necessary to enhance productivity. Connect, collaborate, and amplify one another’s efforts. I also urge the men here to support their women—view them not as competitors but as partners in progress.”
Prof. Janice Olawoye, the Chairperson of the occasion, reflected on the journey thus far, stating, “We need to recognize this significant topic of breaking barriers and fostering impact. Although we have come a long way, we have much further to travel. We owe our pioneers a great deal of gratitude. It is crucial that we teach and mentor younger females, uplifting rather than undermining them. I urge all members of OWSD to see their positions as opportunities to encourage others. Even though breaking barriers requires effort, always view challenges as opportunities to grow; do not be intimidated.”
Following the addresses, awards were presented to the Life Patron, Life Members, and Friends of OWSD in recognition of their contributions to promoting women's involvement in research and community engagement.
In an exclusive interview with CEOAFRICA, Prof. Antonia Simbine, the Director-General of NISER, emphasized the critical role of research in development. “We need to understand that the backbone of development is research. We can only develop if we identify societal problems. Research is about investigating to understand things. Both men and women, as integral members of society, should be involved,” she stated. Prof. Simbine highlighted the unique perspective women bring to research, saying, “Women in research can look at problems through a gender lens.”
For young researchers just beginning their careers, she advised, “Stay focused on your ambitions and work hard; do not cut corners. Consistency in your efforts is key. Find mentors who can genuinely assist you, but remember not to overwork yourselves. Networking and collaboration are equally important.”
Prof. Aina O. Adeogun, OWSD Ibadan Coordinator, explained the motivation behind organizing the event, stating, “Our aim is to dream for more and align ourselves with the objectives of OWSD International. Friends of OWSD are those who support our vision. We also recognize life members for their immense contributions to the advancement of women in research as mentors and guides. Research drives societal development; research findings inform the policies that shape our direction. That is why OWSD emphasizes the significance of research and encourages our members through capacity-building workshops like today’s.”
Detailing future plans, Prof. Adeogun noted, “We have been charged with making science and research more attractive. We’ve conducted several outreach programs, and our goal for this year and beyond is to create innovations that will draw even female students into research.”
Dr. Folusho Agunlana, the Vice Coordinator of OWSD Ibadan Branch, remarked, “This event is a celebration. We have conducted a workshop, honored our life members and Friends of OWSD, and held our Annual General Meeting. Research is vital for advancing women in our society today; women are builders. Research empowers them to ascend to leadership positions. OWSD significantly impacts women, both locally and globally. By participating in research, women gain mentoring and networking opportunities that help them climb the leadership ladder and achieve their goals.”
Dr. Tolulope Victoria Gbadamosi, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of OWSD Ibadan Branch, added, “This annual event is organized by OWSD to honor our past leaders and great female researchers, as well as supportive men who advance women’s causes. It serves as a platform for interaction and an assessment of our progress in advocating for women. The role of women in advancing research is crucial since research addresses problem-solving challenges. I advise early researchers to remain focused and determined to reach the pinnacle of their careers. Joining professional bodies can help them connect with others for collaboration and mentorship.”
The event concluded with the organization’s Annual General Meeting, where reports detailing OWSD's achievements since 2024 were presented, allowing members to deliberate on future initiatives and strategies for progression.
OWSD Ibadan continues to inspire and empower women in research, striving to dismantle barriers and create an inclusive environment that fosters innovation and collaboration across the sciences.
