Interior Minister Appeal for Control of Firearms in Angola

Angelo de Barros Veiga Tavares, the Angolan Home Affairs Minister, has expressed his support for firearms control in the possession of the Defence, Security forces and the barracks, CEOAFRICA reports.

This was disclosed at the 34th anniversary of the Interior Ministry, stressing that many firearms used to commit crime come from these sources.

Speaking at the event, the Minister said the number of crimes committed using firearms calls for urgent attention from the defence and security units of the Country.

“Unfortunately, we still continue to report that some weapons used in criminal actions come from barracks, the defence and security forces, as well as private security companies, he said.

The minister recalled a tragic event which makes the month of June unforgettable in the calendar of the ministry. It was the barbaric murder of three staff belonging to the National Police.

The minister also paid tribute to Late General Osvaldo de Jesus Serra Van-dunem, former incumbent of the ministry who died on June 22,1999 following air accident.

This year’s anniversary with the theme “Ministry of Interior 34 years, Towards a Citizen’s Closest Security gathered members of the consultative council of the sector, central organs and guests, CEOAFRICA gathered.
