In a landmark event aimed at reshaping the future of pharmaceutical practice in Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Health & Social Welfare convened a two-day finalization and validation meeting for the Nigeria National Prescription and Opening Policy (NNPDP) at the Ibeto Hotel in Gudu, Abuja, from May 26th to 27th, 2025.

This significant meeting brought together key stakeholders from across the pharmaceutical industry, including prominent figures such as Pharm Ibrahim Tanko Ayuba, President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), and Pharm. Ambrose Ezeh, National Chairman of the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN).

The gathering saw a diverse representation of professionals and dignitaries dedicated to enhancing the quality of pharmaceutical services in Nigeria. The forthcoming NNPDP intends to establish critical guidelines for prescription standards and practices, thereby improving healthcare delivery and patient safety across the nation.

In his opening remarks, Pharm Ibrahim Tanko Ayuba emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in the development of this policy. "The NNPDP serves as a pivotal framework that not only addresses the immediate needs of our healthcare system but also showcases our commitment to international best practices in pharmaceutical care," he stated. "It is our collective responsibility to ensure that this policy is reflective of the realities in our practice while also being pragmatic in its implementation."

Ayuba further underscored the necessity for ongoing stakeholder engagement: "The dialogue initiated here is just the beginning. This policy will only succeed if it’s driven by our collective input and dedication to continuous improvement in pharmaceutical standards."

Pharm. Ambrose Ezeh added, "As community pharmacists, we play a crucial role in ensuring that prescriptions are not only readily available but also dispensed in adherence to established guidelines. The NNPDP will facilitate this by promoting uniformity across the sector and enhancing the role of pharmacists in patient care."

Discussions during the meeting revolved around the key components of the NNPDP including prescription verification processes, guidelines for ethical prescribing, and the establishment of a monitoring framework to ensure compliance with the policy provisions. Stakeholders contributed valuable insights and recommendations aimed at refining and implementing the policy effectively.

As the meeting concluded, participants left with a renewed sense of purpose and collaboration, committed to advancing the pharmaceutical landscape in Nigeria. The final version of the NNPDP is expected to pave the way for enhanced pharmaceutical services and contribute significantly to the overall healthcare system in the country.

The Federal Ministry of Health & Social Welfare continues to encourage continued discussions and collaborations among industry stakeholders to ensure a thriving pharmaceutical sector dedicated to public health and safety.
