The Premier League champions, Liverpool have announced they will honor Diogo Jota’s contract by paying the remainder of his wages to his family, following his tragic passing at the age of 28.
The Portuguese striker and his brother Andre passed away in the early hours of Thursday morning, July 3, following a car crash in Spain.
Jota, who signed a five-year contract extension with Liverpool in 2022, was reportedly earning £140,000 per week, which amounts to around £7.2 million per year.
The club will pay out close to £14.5 million to Jota's family, which is the exact amount owed for the last two years of his contract.
This gesture demonstrates Liverpool's commitment to supporting the family of the late player during this difficult time.
The father of three died just two weeks after his marriage to his childhood sweetheart Rute Cardoso.
He signed for Liverpool from Wolves in 2020 and made 182 appearances for the Reds, scoring 65 goals and providing 26 assists.
Jota won the Premier League title with Liverpool last season and previously won the FA Cup and two League Cups.
