The nation’s agenda on Agriculture can be better sustained if10% of the nation’s annual budget is allocated to Agriculture.

Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development made this suggestion while contributing to a discussion in Abuja on Thursday at the 19th Nigeria Economic Summit on ways to sustain the nation’s agenda on agriculture.

Adesina who purported that the nation is not spending enough on agriculture, said that financing the growth and development of the agriculture sector should be significantly expanded for realistic growth, also stressing the need to restructure the modes of financing of the sector.

He emphasized on the need to discover new institutions, new arrangements and new platforms that will facilitate affordable financing as well as long-term financing, noting that it is the only way to tackle the challenges facing agriculture.

He concluded however that adequate funding of research and development of institutes that were geared toward innovative agriculture discoveries is important to promote Agriculture which should be the foundation of the nation’s economy.
