The Presidency has taken a swipe at opposition heavyweights Atiku Abubakar of the ADC and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, following the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) strong showing in Saturday’s by-elections.
Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga stirred the pot on X on Monday, posting a photo of Atiku, Obi, and other ADC figures with the caption:
“How is the market now?”
While he did not name names, the message was unmistakable, a subtle taunt at the opposition’s poor performance in the just-concluded polls.
The bye-elections were held to fill legislative seats left vacant by deaths or resignations since the 2023 general elections. APC flexed its political muscle, winning 12 of the 16 seats contested across 12 states. Reports also noted Zamfara, where the exercise was later declared inconclusive.
Other parties made minor gains: APGA captured 2 seats, the PDP 1, and the NNPP 1, leaving APC firmly in control. The unresolved Zamfara seat adds a minor footnote but does little to challenge the ruling party’s dominance.
With the results in, Onanuga’s pointed jab highlights the growing narrative: opposition leaders who once promised to shake the political landscape are now left to “check the market,” as the APC consolidates its grip.
