As the 2nd Annual Malnutrition Awareness Week continues from September 8-12, 2025, the West African Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (WASPEN) is shining a light on an often-overlooked aspect of health: the significant risks associated with malnutrition.

Recent studies have indicated that "Malnourished patients are 2.2 times more likely to be admitted with a serious infection compared to their well-nourished counterparts. This statistic underscores the urgent need for increased awareness and proactive health measures during this awareness week.

Understanding the critical link between nutrition and overall health is essential for everyone. Malnutrition can severely compromise the immune system, leaving individuals vulnerable to infections that can lead to serious health complications.

WASPEN urges everyone to take note of their health. If you or a loved one experiences any signs of malnutrition—such as unexplained weight loss, persistent fatigue, poor appetite, or other concerning symptoms—it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional promptly.

Prevention is better than cure,” a fundamental principle in healthcare, highlights the importance of early intervention in malnutrition. By recognizing the signs and seeking help, individuals can improve their chances of a quicker recovery and better overall outcomes.

Join the fight against malnutrition and raise awareness by participating in the campaign with the hashtags #ASPENMAW25 and #WASPEN25. Together, we can combat this pressing public health issue and ensure that everyone has access to the nutrition they need for a healthier future.
