PSN secures major healthcare commitments as high-level delegation visits Adamawa State

The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) has recorded significant advocacy gains following a high-powered visit to Adamawa State, where Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri approved all the Society’s key requests aimed at advancing pharmacy training, drug security, and public health systems.

The PSN delegation, led by its President Pharm. Ayuba Tanko Ibrahim, FPSN, comprised some of the most respected figures in the profession, including former Presidents Pharm. Olumide Akintayo, FPSN and Pharm. Ahmed Yakasai, FPSN, mni, Immediate Past President Pharm. (Prof.) Cyril Usifoh, FPSN, National Secretary Pharm. Gafar ’Lanre Madehin, FPSN, and National Chairman of ALPS, Pharm. (Mrs.) Scholastica Mnena Lan, FPSN.

Pharm. Ibrahim described the mission as a “strategic engagement designed to deepen partnerships and strengthen pharmaceutical systems across Adamawa State.”

The delegation began its visit at the Adamawa State Health Supplies Management Agency, where they were warmly received by Executive Secretary Pharm. Dauda Teri Kwaghe, the state’s pioneer Pharmacy Consultant.

Delivering a welcome message, Pharm. Talba, Director of Pharmaceutical Services at the SPHCDA and PSN State Chairman, applauded the national hierarchy of the Society for what he called “consistent, targeted leadership in strengthening drug management and supply systems across the country.”

In her goodwill remarks, Pharm. Nneka Okwuma, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Pharmaceutical Matters, praised the PSN for remaining steadfast in its advocacy.

According to her: “Adamawa has benefited immensely from PSN’s national drive toward improved pharmacy governance. Your coming today is both timely and impactful.”

Also speaking, Pharm. Titus, Director of Pharmaceutical Services, SMOH, emphasized the state’s ongoing reforms and noted: “We welcome the PSN’s support as we continue to build a more reliable and efficient drug distribution framework for our people.”

Responding, the PSN President commended the state team for their dedication, assuring them that the Society would continue to collaborate closely with Adamawa State to strengthen regulatory frameworks, build capacity, and support service delivery.

The PSN delegation later paid homage to His Royal Highness Dr. Muhammadu Barkindo Aliyu Mustapha, the Lamido of Adamawa. They were received by the Galadima Adamawa, who led them to the royal chambers.

During the visit, the PSN President presented essential medicines to the Palace Clinic, noting that the gesture was part of the Society’s commitment to community well-being. He emphasised that traditional institutions remain “critical partners in expanding access to quality healthcare.”

The highlight of the engagement came during a courtesy visit to Government House, Yola, where the PSN presented three major advocacy requests to Governor Fintiri:

1. The establishment of a Pharmacy Training Institution in Adamawa State

2. State approval to host the 2026 PSN Colloquium, alongside the launch of the Centenary Endowment Fund

3. A directive for the Ministry of Environment to discontinue inspecting pharmacy premises, as this falls outside its regulatory mandate

After listening to the delegation, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri granted approval to all three requests.

He commended the Society for its national impact, saying: “The PSN has shown unwavering commitment to the health of Nigerians. Adamawa is proud to partner with a body that continues to raise standards and protect public health.”

In appreciation of the governor’s support, the PSN President presented him with a Plaque of Honour, conferring on him the title of 'Pharmacy Friendly Governor.' The delegation also gifted him a first aid box.

The advocacy mission concluded with a review meeting at City Green Hotel, where the delegation assessed the outcomes of the visit and reaffirmed its commitment to sustained collaboration with the Adamawa State Government.

The PSN expressed deep appreciation for the hospitality extended throughout the visit, pledging continued partnership to ensure that residents of Adamawa State enjoy better access to quality medicines and strengthened healthcare services.
