The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Oyebode Adebowale, has called on Nigeria’s academic community to intensify research efforts that directly shape environmental policy and strengthen national development.
His message was delivered on his behalf by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), Professor Juwon Tunde Arotiba, during the opening ceremony of the 18th Annual Conference of the Zoological Society of Nigeria (ZSN), held on Friday, November 26, 2025, at Trenchard Hall.
Prof. Arotiba, speaking in the stead of the Vice Chancellor, warmly welcomed delegates, researchers, policymakers, industry leaders and students to the University of Ibadan—described as “the cradle of zoological education and research in Nigeria.”
“As a University committed to excellence, UI is honoured to host distinguished scholars and partners who continue to expand the frontiers of zoological and environmental sciences,” he said on behalf of the Vice Chancellor.
Addressing the conference theme, “Healthy Ecosystems: Path to Productivity and Sustainability,” the Vice Chancellor emphasized that ecosystem health is now central to Nigeria’s development priorities.
“This theme speaks directly to our national realities. A healthy ecosystem is not merely an academic concern; it is the foundation for economic resilience, public health, food security and long-term sustainability,” he said through Prof. Arotiba.
He noted that universities hold a critical mandate in advancing research that informs policies needed to tackle climate change, biodiversity loss, environmental degradation and related socio-economic challenges.
“For us in the academic community, ecosystem health also speaks to the strength of our research culture, our collaborative networks, our innovations, and the quality of graduates we produce. A productive nation must be driven by a productive knowledge system,” he added.
Commending the Zoological Society of Nigeria for sustaining robust scholarly engagement and promoting multidisciplinary research, the Vice Chancellor stressed that complex environmental challenges require cross-disciplinary solutions.
“The wide range of abstracts and disciplines represented at this conference shows that modern science thrives on collaboration. No single discipline can address today’s environmental uncertainties,” he said.
He also applauded the Department of Zoology and the Local Organizing Committee for their coordination, innovation and commitment in hosting ZSN 18.
“We value our long-standing partnership with the Zoological Society of Nigeria. Your activities continue to enrich our academic environment and inspire future scientists,” the Vice Chancellor added.
Conveying the VC’s closing charge to participants, Prof. Arotiba encouraged delegates to embrace meaningful engagement throughout the conference.
“I urge all participants to make the most of the discussions, interactions and collaborative opportunities here. May your engagements lead to research outcomes that strengthen our ecosystems, our institutions and our country,” he said.
He then declared the 18th Annual Conference of the Zoological Society of Nigeria open on behalf of the Vice Chancellor.
