The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the demolition and complete reconstruction of the Carter Bridge, one of Lagos State’s key transport arteries linking Lagos Island to the mainland.

The announcement was made by David Umahi, Minister of Works, on Wednesday during a briefing at the State House in Abuja, following the FEC meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu.

According to Umahi, the bridge has reached a state where rehabilitation is no longer feasible. “The total recommendation was that Carter Bridge can no longer be rehabilitated; it should be demolished and a new bridge constructed,” he said.

The council also approved ₦5.6 billion for advanced engineering consultants to handle the design and cost assessments for the new bridge. This is part of the federal government’s broader strategy to strengthen critical transport infrastructure across the country.

Umahi further disclosed that the FEC approved six major projects during the session, including highway reconstruction and upgrades across different geopolitical zones. The administration is targeting the completion and presidential commissioning of at least four major projects per zone by May 15, 2026. “These are not palliative works; they are major infrastructure projects,” the minister emphasized.

The Carter Bridge serves as a vital traffic corridor in Lagos, handling a significant volume of commuters between the island and the mainland, and its reconstruction is expected to enhance road safety and traffic flow once completed.
