The Cross River State House of Assembly has indefinitely suspended Dickson Agbor, who represents Obubra I State Constituency, following allegations that he assaulted his wife.
According to reports by journalist Agba Jalingo, the alleged incident occurred on Saturday, February 28, 2028, at the Assembly quarters and was reportedly linked to accusations of infidelity.
The suspension was approved on Thursday, March 5, after a motion was moved by Davies Etta and seconded by Francis Bassey Asuquo. Speaking during the motion, Etta condemned the alleged conduct, describing it as “behaviour unbecoming of a lawmaker and contrary to the ethical standards expected of members of the legislative arm of government.” He stressed that the House must act to preserve its integrity and reputation, saying, “We must ensure that members conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the values and responsibilities entrusted to us by the people.”
Following deliberations, the Assembly resolved that Agbor be suspended from all legislative activities indefinitely, pending further investigation. An ad hoc committee has been constituted to investigate the matter and report its findings to the House for further action. In compliance with the House directive, Agbor was escorted out of the chamber by the Sergeant-at-Arms.
Commenting on the development, Elvert Ayambem, Speaker of the House, reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to upholding discipline, dignity, and integrity, stating, “The House will not condone any form of misconduct capable of bringing the legislature into disrepute. Members must conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the trust reposed in them by the people.”
Earlier, Governor Bassey Otu and his wife, Eyoanwan Otu, criticized the alleged actions, describing them as irresponsible.
In contrast, Agbor’s wife, Glory Agbor, released a statement on Thursday requesting privacy and asserting that the matter had been resolved within the family. She said, “There is no doubt that some people have tried to paint the name of my family in a bad light, but my husband and I are at peace. Issues arose, but we have been able to amicably resolve our differences. Please leave my family alone.”
Glory Agbor also issued an apology to her husband and family, and announced her withdrawal from the Legislators’ Wives Association.
The Assembly has indicated that Agbor’s suspension will remain in force until the investigative committee concludes its report and recommends further action.
