A team of mobile police officers on Tuesday sealed off a venue in Calabar slated for the inauguration of the membership registration, mobilisation, and revalidation committee of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The committee, headed by Eko Alobo, was established by the party in Cross River State ahead of its primaries. Its inauguration was scheduled to take place at an event centre along Marian Road by 10:00 a.m. on March 10, 2026.
However, as early as 7:00 a.m., heavily armed mobile police officers had cordoned off the venue, preventing party members and supporters from gaining access to the premises.
A source familiar with the development disclosed that the security operatives were acting on directives to seal off the venue following a petition reportedly filed by some members of the party.
Efforts to resolve the situation proved unsuccessful despite the intervention of senior party leaders. Among those involved in discussions with the state Commissioner of Police were the ADC South-South Zonal Vice Chairman, Usani Uguru Usani, and former member of the House of Representatives, Bassey Eko Ewa.
Following the standoff, the inauguration was relocated to the residence of Usani in Calabar, where a large number of party members subsequently gathered.
