The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has resigned from office, citing the need to preserve stability in governance and ensure the effective functioning of the position.
The resignation was announced in a statement issued on Friday by the Kwankwasiyya Movement, which described the decision as difficult but necessary in the overall interest of the state.
According to the statement, recent developments had significantly constrained Gwarzo’s ability to fully discharge his duties. It noted that the prevailing circumstances limited the effective realization of the responsibilities associated with the office, making it imperative for him to step aside to allow for optimal governance.
The movement, however, dismissed any suggestion that the resignation was an admission of wrongdoing, particularly in light of allegations previously raised by the Kano State House of Assembly. It maintained that Gwarzo remains confident in his record of public service and his commitment to the people.
Framing the move as an act of statesmanship, the group said the resignation was intended to ease political tensions and promote stability in the state’s governance. It added that the decision reflects a commitment to peace, political maturity, and the avoidance of disruptions that could hinder development.
Gwarzo is expected to redirect his efforts toward political activities within the Kwankwasiyya Movement, including strengthening its structure and engaging in strategic preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The movement also called for calm among its supporters and residents of the state.
Gwarzo’s resignation comes amid mounting pressure from the Kano State House of Assembly, which had accused him of misconduct related to the discharge of his duties and had initiated impeachment proceedings against him.
