The Plateau State Government has ordered the strict enforcement of the ban on commercial motorcycle operations within the Jos metropolis following a deadly attack in the state capital.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang issued the directive during a statewide broadcast on Tuesday in Jos, as part of efforts to prevent further security breaches and restore public safety.
The move comes after gunmen attacked Angwan-Rukuba community on Sunday, killing at least 28 people, including women, children and students, and leaving several others injured.
Condemning the attack, Mutfwang expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extended condolences to affected families, assuring residents that the government would take decisive steps to avert a recurrence.
“As a government, we share deeply in the grief of the bereaved families and remain committed to strengthening measures that will safeguard lives and property,” the governor said.
He disclosed that a State Security Council meeting had been convened to review and reinforce the state’s security architecture, with a focus on making it more proactive and responsive to emerging threats.
Mutfwang directed security agencies to ensure full compliance with the existing ban on commercial motorcycles, commonly known as Okada, within the Jos Greater Master Plan. He added that the Commissioner of Police would provide detailed enforcement guidelines.
Reaffirming his administration’s resolve, the governor stated that Plateau State would not yield to intimidation or fear, emphasizing the government’s commitment to protecting residents and maintaining peace.
He also commended the people of Angwan-Rukuba and the wider Plateau community for their restraint in the aftermath of the attack, urging citizens to remain law-abiding and vigilant.
The governor called on residents to report any suspicious activities to security agencies, stressing that maintaining security is a collective responsibility. He further assured that efforts were underway to apprehend those responsible for the attack and prevent future incidents.
