Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has dismissed speculation about a possible defection from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), reaffirming his commitment to the party despite its ongoing leadership crisis.

In an interview with BBC Pidgin, Atiku expressed confidence that the courts would affirm the leadership of David Mark, noting that a resolution could be reached before the party’s congress. He stated that while public opinion may be divided, the party remains optimistic about a favourable judicial outcome.

Addressing suggestions that he could consider joining another political platform, Atiku emphasised that such a move was unnecessary, citing the ADC’s established structures and the level of investment made in building the party. He described the ADC as a product of a coalition effort initiated over a year ago, adding that the focus remains on resolving internal disputes through legal means and sustaining party activities.

On the question of the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections, Atiku acknowledged the presence of other influential figures within the ADC, including Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso. He characterised the party as a coalition of leaders, suggesting a collective approach to its political ambitions.

Atiku’s remarks come at a critical time for the ADC, as it grapples with internal divisions that could shape its leadership structure and influence its preparations for the 2027 elections. The outcome of ongoing court proceedings is expected to play a decisive role in determining the party’s direction and its eventual presidential contest.
