Tinubu confirms death of Army General in Borno terrorist attack
President Bola Tinubu has confirmed the death of Brigadier-General Oseni Omoh Braimah following a terrorist attack on a military base in Benisheikh, Borno State.
The attack, carried out by suspected Boko Haram insurgents, targeted the camp of the 29 Task Force Brigade under Operation HADIN KAI in the early hours of Thursday. An unspecified number of military personnel were also killed during the incident.
According to Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations at Defence Headquarters, the coordinated assault occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the president extended his condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers and the Nigerian Armed Forces, urging them to remain resolute in the face of the loss.
Tinubu commended the bravery of the troops, noting that they resisted the attackers and prevented them from overrunning nearby communities.
“From the reports I have received, our armed forces have been conducting sustained land and air offensives against the insurgents, neutralising many of their fighters and commanders. This counterattack is a sign of desperation,” the statement said.
The president described the fallen soldiers as heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of the nation, assuring that their efforts would not be in vain.
He also called on Nigerians and the media to support the military’s ongoing operations against insurgency and banditry, cautioning against narratives that could undermine troop morale.
Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the capacity of the armed forces and prioritising the welfare of personnel. He further extended condolences to the government and people of Borno State, pledging continued collaboration to restore lasting peace in the region.
