The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has promoted renowned pharmacist and drug development expert, Margaret Ilomuanya, to the rank of full Professor in its Faculty of Pharmacy, marking a major milestone in a career defined by high-impact research and a strong commitment to bridging laboratory science with community health.

Announced in the second quarter of 2026, the elevation reflects her growing influence in pharmaceutical science and global research collaboration. Over the years, Ilomuanya has established herself as a leading voice in drug discovery, working with international institutions to address critical health challenges.

Central to her achievements is the MED-AFRICA initiative, where she serves as Principal Investigator. The project led to the establishment of the first Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) laboratory within a university setting in West Africa, a breakthrough in indigenous drug development and translational research. Located within UNILAG’s Faculty of Pharmacy, the facility was developed through strategic collaboration with partners including the Population Council Center for Biomedical Research and Jaiven Pharmaceuticals Consulting in the United States, with funding support secured under the MED-AFRICA Foundation.

Commissioned in May 2024, the state-of-the-art GMP-compliant facility enables the production of clinical-grade pharmaceutical products and supports cutting-edge research, including HIV prevention technologies and multipurpose prevention innovations. It also provides a platform for translating laboratory discoveries into real-world healthcare solutions, strengthening Nigeria’s capacity for local drug development.

Ilomuanya’s research portfolio further includes collaborations with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, while her work has attracted support from the Science for Africa Foundation, USAID, and the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Her leadership in transforming UNILAG’s pharmaceutical laboratory into a GMP-compliant research hub has positioned the university as a key player in pharmaceutical innovation in West Africa, providing local scientists with the infrastructure to conduct world-class research despite funding challenges.

In a statement, Ilomuanya described her promotion as “humbling and deeply fulfilling,” noting that it reflects years of dedication to advancing pharmaceutical science and mentoring the next generation of researchers. She also expressed appreciation to the university’s leadership for fostering an enabling environment for academic excellence.

Beyond academia, she is recognized for her community engagement, including her collaboration with the Holy Family Catholic Church Festac, which has been cited as a model for impactful outreach.

Stakeholders in the sector, including the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), have described her as a scholar of integrity and excellence, noting that her elevation comes at a critical time as Nigeria intensifies efforts toward indigenous drug development.

They added that her promotion would further strengthen UNILAG’s reputation as a hub for pharmaceutical innovation and contribute to training a new generation of scientists equipped to tackle emerging healthcare challenges, while reinforcing the institution’s standing as one of Nigeria’s leading universities.
