Domestic airline operators under the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) have suspended their planned nationwide shutdown, opting instead to engage in dialogue following intervention by the federal government.
The decision was reached at an emergency meeting of the association’s leadership on Friday, after members considered an appeal by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, who urged restraint and constructive engagement with industry stakeholders.
The AON had earlier announced plans to halt operations from Monday, April 20, citing the sharp increase in the cost of Jet A1 fuel. According to the association, the price of the fuel has surged from approximately ₦900 to over ₦3,000 per litre, significantly straining airline operations.
In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the association confirmed that the shutdown had been temporarily suspended to allow for further discussions.
“The planned shutdown action scheduled for Monday, April 20, 2026, is hereby called off, albeit temporarily, pending the outcome of the meeting called by the Honourable Minister,” the statement read.
The operators said the decision was made in good faith to create room for negotiations, with a stakeholders’ meeting scheduled for Wednesday, April 22.
However, the AON cautioned that the suspension is conditional on tangible improvements within the aviation sector. It highlighted ongoing operational challenges, including demands by service providers for upfront payments, which it said are exacerbating financial pressures on airlines.
“We further request that these agencies halt the practice of demanding upfront payment for services rendered, as this continues to compound the financial burden on operators,” the association added.
The group also called on relevant authorities to ensure that airlines are not subjected to disruptions or undue pressure during the negotiation period.
While acknowledging the minister’s intervention, the AON emphasised that its next course of action will depend on the outcome of the forthcoming stakeholder discussions.
