Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has forwarded the nomination of Murtala Sule Garo to the State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation as deputy governor.

Garo, a seasoned politician, is the son-in-law of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar. His nomination follows the resignation of the former deputy governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, on March 27, 2026, after a political rift with the governor and his subsequent defection to another camp.

Prior to his resignation, the Kano State House of Assembly had initiated impeachment proceedings against Gwarzo over allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, breach of public trust, and financial impropriety. Following his exit, Governor Yusuf also accused him of attempting to undermine his administration.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, Yusuf said the nomination was in accordance with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers a governor to appoint a deputy governor in the event of a vacancy.

The statement noted that the decision followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders and urged the Assembly to approve the nomination.

Describing Garo as an experienced political administrator, the governor highlighted his over two decades of service in both elective and appointed positions. Garo has previously served as State Organising Secretary of his party, Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor, and Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area. He also held positions as Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. In the 2023 general elections, he was the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano.

According to the statement, the nomination is part of the administration’s broader efforts to strengthen governance and ensure continuity in effective service delivery across the state.
