The Federal Government has announced plans to convert more than 42 police colleges nationwide into monotechnics as part of efforts to strengthen capacity and professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force.
The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, disclosed this following a high-level meeting with police authorities in Abuja. He said the initiative aligns with the reform agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aimed at repositioning the police through improved education and institutional development.
As part of the broader strategy, the president recently approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State. According to presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the approval is in line with the provisions of the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021, which allows for the expansion of the academy beyond its current base in Wudil, Kano State.
Alausa noted that the planned upgrade of police colleges into monotechnics is a key component of the administration’s transformation plan for the security sector. He explained that discussions at the meeting also covered infrastructure design and physical planning for the academy’s new southern campus.
The minister said the National Universities Commission is expected to fast-track verification processes to enable the new campus to commence academic activities, with the first intake of students projected between September and November 2026.
He added that the meeting, attended by senior police officials including the Inspector-General of Police and top training officers, also focused on enhancing the capacity of existing police training institutions across the country.
According to Alausa, the initiative underscores the government’s commitment to equipping the police with the knowledge and skills required to effectively discharge their duties and address contemporary security challenges.
The Inspector-General of Police, who also spoke at the meeting, emphasised the critical role of education in addressing challenges across all sectors, including law enforcement.
