The House of Representatives has called for stricter enforcement of regulations governing the siting and operation of gas filling stations and retail outlets across the country following a series of gas explosions in Lagos.

The resolution was passed during Wednesday’s plenary after lawmakers adopted a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Adesola Adedayo, who represents Apapa Federal Constituency in Lagos State.

Presenting the motion, Adedayo referenced a gas explosion that occurred last month in the Ijora Badia area of Apapa Local Government Area, where 15 people sustained injuries. The incident was reportedly triggered by a leaking gas cylinder from a mini gas outlet operating within the community.

The lawmaker also drew attention to another explosion that occurred on Tuesday along Adeleye Street in the Apapa axis of Lagos. According to him, the explosion happened at a construction site located behind two shops, resulting in extensive damage to nearby buildings, significant financial and material losses, and injuries to five persons.

Adedayo noted that one of the victims was a student who was on his way to school when the incident occurred.

He stressed the urgent need to address the recurring cases of gas explosions in densely populated and low-income residential communities, warning that the incidents continue to endanger lives and destroy property.

Following deliberations, lawmakers unanimously adopted the motion through a voice vote presided over by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.

Consequently, the House mandated all relevant regulatory agencies responsible for the approval and monitoring of gas filling stations and retail outlets to strictly enforce existing safety and location regulations.

The lawmakers also directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant bodies to immediately provide relief materials and support for victims affected by the explosions.
