Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has expressed deep concern over the recent abduction of pupils and students in Ahoro-Esinle community, Oriire Local Government Area, describing the incident as one that has devastated many families.
The governor spoke on Saturday during the inauguration of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) of the Oyo State Police Command in Ibadan. The event was hosted by the Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Olugbenga.
Reports indicate that an unspecified number of students were abducted from schools in the community on Friday. The attack also led to the kidnapping of a secondary school vice principal, while a teacher and a motorcyclist were reportedly killed.
Reacting to the development, Makinde said the growing cases of kidnapping and violent crimes in the state underscore the need for collective efforts in addressing insecurity.
“We have witnessed a series of kidnappings and various violent crimes, including the kidnapping of school children yesterday, which has devastated many families,” the governor said.
He stressed that security should not be left solely in the hands of government and security agencies, noting that residents also have a critical role to play through timely information sharing.
Makinde further stated that peace and stability are essential for social and economic development, warning that violence and insecurity could hinder progress in the state.
“The inauguration of the VCRU is timely. Security is not the responsibility of government alone; it is a collective duty. Citizens must remain vigilant and report suspicious movements or activities in their communities,” he added.
The governor expressed optimism that the newly launched elite police unit would strengthen efforts to combat violent crimes and restore public confidence in the state’s security architecture.
He also prayed for sustained peace and stability in Oyo State and across Nigeria.
