The National Screening Committee of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has cleared former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, to contest in the party’s forthcoming presidential primaries ahead of the 2027 general election.

Obi arrived at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja at about 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday, accompanied by Senator Victor Umeh, who represents Anambra Central in the National Assembly.

The former Labour Party presidential candidate was screened by a committee chaired by former Minister of Education, Sam Egwu.

Speaking after the exercise, Egwu disclosed that the committee was satisfied with Obi’s performance and confirmed that he met all constitutional and electoral requirements to participate in the party’s presidential primaries.

“This is to certify that following the screening of the presidential aspirant of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), His Excellency Peter Obi, and being satisfied that he has complied with all the requirements of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the provisions of the Electoral Act, as well as the satisfactory responses provided to questions raised by members of the committee, he is hereby cleared to contest in the presidential primaries of the party for the 2027 presidential election,” Egwu stated.

He subsequently presented Obi with an official clearance letter alongside the party’s presidential nomination form bearing serial number 001.

Obi had earlier obtained the NDC presidential nomination and expression of interest forms on Sunday, May 17, which was initially the deadline set by the party for the purchase of forms by aspirants.

Although the party on Monday extended the deadline for the collection of nomination forms for other categories of aspirants until May 24, it maintained that the window for presidential aspirants had officially closed.

The NDC also announced that the submission of completed nomination forms by screened and cleared aspirants would commence on Wednesday, May 20, and end on May 26.

With Obi emerging as the sole cleared presidential aspirant, attention is now expected to shift to the party’s primary election date, which is yet to be announced.
