Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has emerged as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 presidential election.

Atiku was declared the winner by the ADC Presidential Primary Electoral Committee in Abuja following a two-day collation process. The announcement was made late Wednesday night by the returning officer for the exercise, Tunde Ogbeha.

According to the official results, Atiku secured 1,846,370 votes to defeat his closest challengers, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi and economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen. Amaechi polled 504,117 votes, while Hayatu-Deen garnered 177,120 votes.

The outcome, however, has been rejected by both Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen, who raised concerns over the conduct of the primary and the collation process.

Atiku’s victory positions him as the ADC’s flag bearer ahead of the 2027 presidential election, following weeks of political consultations and realignments within the opposition coalition.

This marks the fourth time Atiku has emerged as a presidential candidate in Nigeria’s political history, further underscoring his enduring influence in the country’s opposition politics.
