The Federal Government has officially flagged off the construction of the 125-kilometre Gombe–Biu dual carriageway, a key segment of the Akwanga–Jos–Bauchi–Gombe–Biu–Maiduguri highway corridor, with an estimated project cost of ₦1.245 trillion.

The flag-off ceremony, held on June 4, 2026, was performed by Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The project is expected to improve transportation infrastructure across the Northeast, enhance regional connectivity, and facilitate the movement of goods and services within the region and beyond. It forms part of the Federal Government’s broader efforts to upgrade critical road networks and stimulate economic growth.

Speaking at the event, Governor Inuwa Yahaya described the project as a significant milestone for the people of Gombe State and the Northeast, noting that it addresses a longstanding demand for the rehabilitation and expansion of the strategic transport corridor.

He said the highway would complement ongoing investments in the state's agricultural and livestock sectors, including the 184-hectare Agro-Livestock Development Zone, an ultramodern abattoir, and an international livestock market.

According to the governor, the improved road network is expected to strengthen value chains, reduce transportation costs, and create opportunities for economic expansion across the region.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, who attended the ceremony alongside members of the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Works, said the project reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing critical infrastructure deficits and improving road connectivity nationwide.

Umahi commended the Gombe State Government for its collaboration with the Federal Government and expressed confidence that the project would contribute significantly to regional development and economic integration.

The minister also disclosed that the project scope had been expanded by an additional nine kilometres to further enhance connectivity and ensure the durability of the road network.

Construction is expected to commence within the next 30 days, with Hi-Tech Construction Company Limited handling the execution of the project.

The event was attended by traditional rulers, political leaders, government officials, and community stakeholders, who expressed support for the initiative and pledged their cooperation throughout the construction period.
