Popular media personality Daddy Freeze has opened up on why he left the service of songs organised in honour of late Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo before the programme ended.
Speaking during an Instagram Live session over the weekend, the broadcaster said he was dissatisfied with the direction of the event after gospel singer Mercy Chinwo's performance, which he described as more of a concert than a funeral tribute.
The service of songs, held last Wednesday in Lagos, drew several notable figures, including gospel artistes, clergy members, Nollywood stars, and other dignitaries who gathered to celebrate the life of the late actor.
According to Daddy Freeze, the atmosphere of a funeral should be solemn and reflective, featuring softer music and hymns rather than energetic performances.
"Mercy Chinwo climbed the pulpit and turned the place into a concert. At that point, I got up and left. Does Mercy Chinwo not have soft music?" he said.
Questioning the appropriateness of the performance for the occasion, he maintained that funeral services should be marked by calm and contemplative worship.
"Do you understand what a funeral is? The kind of music that should be played at a funeral is soft music. They should have just played hymns for like two hours, then I would have sat there and enjoyed it. So when she was performing, I just got up and left," he added.
The event featured musical ministrations from several gospel artistes, including Mercy Chinwo, Peterson Okopi, Moses Bliss, Ebuka Songs, and the Laud Urban Choir.
Daddy Freeze's comments have since generated mixed reactions online, with social media users divided over whether funeral services should remain strictly solemn or serve as celebrations of life through vibrant praise and worship.
